HONORING HEROES

Veterans Day, November 11, the day when the United States honor the veterans of all wars. It is the day when we honor the heroes who fought for that which our country values, and to protect our freedoms. They sacrificed much, many with their own lives. But the challenge continues to this day. We still need heroes who would protect and preserve that which matters.

The Bible also tells of heroes … heroes of the faith. They were not perfect, but they showed an unwavering commitment to God. The book of Hebrews catalogues some of these heroes, many of them unnamed, who held on to the truth of God even in the face of unbelievable opposition. Many sacrificed their very lives, and the faith they upheld lived on to future generations. “These were all commended for their faith” (Hebrews 11.39). And their example continues to bear witness to the rightness of trusting God and his ways.

From biblical times and on to Christian history, we do find additional examples of people who upheld the truth of the gospel despite much opposition. One such person was Martin Luther. He was a priest whose study of Scripture, especially the letter of Paul to the Romans, led him to the gospel of salvation by faith alone. He did not keep quiet about his discovery. In October 31, 1517, he posted in a public place what is now known as his “95 Theses,” seeking further discussion with anyone interested. But the authorities were not pleased and sought to stop him from spreading the truth of the gospel. When placed on trial at which he was pushed to recant his views, it is said that Luther replied:

“Unless I can be instructed and convinced with evidence from the Holy Scriptures or with open, clear, and distinct grounds of reasoning … then I cannot and will not recant, because it is neither safe nor wise to act against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me!”

With a rich history of faithful followers of Christ, the call remains for all Christians to keep the faith. That’s the best way to honor our heroes. Again, as the author of Hebrews would put it: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12.1-2).
